Policy and Advertisement Changes
The Tobacco 21 Law:
Findings from the H&H study influenced the enactment of The Tobacco 21 Law. The Tobacco 21 Law in California raised the minimum age of selling tobacco to 21 years of age, and this included electronic devices along with conventional tobacco forms. This law expanded from California to all states in the U.S.
Flavored Tobacco Ban:
Findings from the ADVANCE and H&H study influenced the flavored tobacco ban in California. With growing concerns that flavored nicotine products were appealing to a younger population, the Flavored Tobacco Ban was enacted in LA County, then all of California. The ban restricts sale of many flavored tobacco items and tobacco flavor enhancers in California.
Surgeon General’s Advisory:
Findings from the H&H study influenced the Surgeon General’s Advisory on E-cigarette use that declared vaping nicotine to be an epidemic among US youth. The report discusses the dangers of using nicotine and the health risks that follow nicotine use.
California’s Wake Up Campaign:
Findings from the H&H study influenced California’s Wake Up Campaign. The “Wake Up” campaign, by the California Department of Health, released ads discussing the mass-marketing of e-cigarettes and the health consequences that follow e-cigarette use.
Teens who vape are 3 times more likely to smoke one year later
Those who vape stronger nicotine concentrations are associated with accelerated use of e-cigarette frequency and use of combustible cigarettes
Oral Nicotine Product Warning:
Findings from the ADVANCE study influenced FDA’s warning to Krave Nicotine. Krave Nicotine gummies were being illegally marketed and sold with no marketing approval from the FDA. Following FDA’s warning to Krave Nicotine, the gummies were removed from the market.
Krave Gummies Ban
Data from the Fall 2021 ADVANCE survey highlighted that nicotine gums, mints, and gummies were rising in popularity among teens, second only to e-cigarette use in our sample. Our findings directly informed the removal of illicit nicotine gummies from the market after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter to the company KRAVE.
Fetanyl Training for School Staff and Administrators
In Spring 2023, ADVANCE was able provide an ‘in-person’ training with school leaders based on the concurrent information about the dangers, forms and prevalence of fentanyl. The goal was to ultimately provide leaders with the strategies of prevention between youth.
